Statement of Purpose
To provide care and support for people who are frail aged and people with disabilities and their carers who are without family or social support and who are unable to access private or public transport to meet their basic needs.

Volunteers through offering assistance and support in a culturally appropriate manner aim to improve consumer's quality of life whilst respecting the consumers independence.

Registration
A person must be frail aged or have a disability, or be the carer of a consumer.

To be eligible for the use of a Sunassist service a person must first be registered with the service. It is important to ensure that priority is directed to persons within the target group most in need of a service. The purpose of assessment is to understand and be aware of a person’s strengths and needs.

Service Boundaries
Services are within a 55km radius of Mildura within the irrigation district and part of MRCC and into the Millewa.

Disabled Access
Two wheelchair vehicles are available to transport consumers.

Interpreting Services
Consumers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are supported through the use of interpreting services to assist in accessing Sunassist services.

Office Hours
8am to 2pm Monday to Friday
Transport services are provided Monday to Friday 8.15am until 5pm.

Aged & Disability Services provides services to support frail, older people, people with disabilities and their carers in Mildura Rural City who are deemed to be in need of support to retain their independence and quality of life.

Aged & Disability Services is involved in a number of initiatives to promote the safety and well being of older members of the community and people with a disability.

The Adult Day Activity Centre’s are located at Mildura and Merbein and provide specialist programs that cater for specific target groups. Operating hours of programs vary from 1 day per week up to 6 days a week. Attending a Adult Day Activity Centre assists in preventing inappropriate/premature admission into residential care. The centres also provide much needed respite for carers.

The Mildura venue can cater for special needs clients, with such installations as the "specialist assist toilet", where no manual lifting is required.

Costs
Charges for meals, transport and programs are kept to a minimum and will be discussed at the time of assessment.

Activities
All activities and programs are developed to meet the assessed need of the group or individual. Activities are varied throughout the week and include:

  • reminiscing activities
  • intellectual and physical stimulation
  • community access programs
  • performances from community groups
  • craft
  • personal grooming

Transport

  • Centre’s have minimal transport facilities
  • We encourage clients to arrange own transport, where possible - via:

Eligibility (Yes)
This service is available only to clients who attend State funded programs and are:

  • Minimum of 16 years old;

  • Intellectually disabled; and

  • Referred by Centrelink.

There may be a waiting list for this service, depending on vacancies.

For those unable to travel to the Christie Centre independently, transport is available.

Clients may apply to the Department of Social Security for a mobility allowance, if they attend more than 8 hours per week.

Fees
The cost of transport is $2.50 per day- subject to review, charged on a quarterly basis.

The availability of the Christie Centre transport fleet allows us to offer these vehicles for programs at no extra cost to clients.

Area Serviced
The bus service covers the former City and Shire of Mildura boundaries.
